Surgeon and oncologist. A graduate of the Medical University of Lublin. He was fellow of the European Postgraduate Gastro-surgical School at the Academic Medical Center of the University of Amsterdam, where he defended his doctoral thesis. For last 12 years head of the Department of Surgical Oncology of the Medical University of Lublin. At that time the department has implemented into clinical practice intraoperative radiotherapy, autologous fat transfer for soft (breast) tissue augmentation with adipose-derived stem cells, and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). In the years 2008-2014 he was President-Elect, President and Past-President of the Polish Society of Surgical Oncology. In 2012 he became a member of the Board of the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO), now chair of the Website and Editorial Committee of the ESSO. He is a member of the elite European Surgical Association.
Prof. Polkowski is regional consultant in the field of surgical oncology. His main areas of scientific interests are: pathogenesis, molecular biology, and the combined modality therapy of gastro-intestinal malignancies, and in particular multidisciplinary treatment of liver metastases of colorectal cancer, intraoperative radiotherapy of breast cancer and gastro-intestinal cancer, complete cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC for peritoneal surface malignancies. He is author of nearly 200 published articles or book chapters and monographs. Professor Polkowski was awarded by Minister of Health of the Republic of Poland. He was also awarded the Honorary Medal of the Mayor of Lublin in medical care and the Silver Cross of Merit by President of the Republic of Poland.
